Van der Sar Saved the Community Shield

This year's Community Shield in English football saw heroic Edwin van den Sar gave Manchester United the shield and also 'saved' the game. When 2 big teams like Manchester United and Chelsea shared the same pitch, I always expect a big football match. I always expect those 2 sides to play a high tempo football with a lot of action on the pitch. I always expect a beautiful attacking style of football and a display of highly talented players showing why people call them world class footballers.
Did those things happen in the 2007 Community Shield? I believe the answer is no. Both team displayed an almost boring game. The tempo wasn't that high without a lot of real chances in front of the goal. Both manager, Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson, didn't field their best team. We didn't see Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves while they are good players with high reputaion. I expected Scholes to play behind Wayne Rooney and Hargreaves controls midfield alonside Michael Carrick. We also saw that Joe Cole played as a striker (yes, a bloody striker!!) which is weird because Cole is pure winger. I know that he has an attacking syle of play but seeing Cole playing as a striker is beyond my wildest imagination about football. Claudio Pizzaro then was introduced in the second half which brought me to a simple question : Why didn't Mourinho field him from the first minute?
It's a good thing that the game went on to penalties. The shootout was much more entertaining than the 2 halves before. Van der Sar really showed what he's got when he blocked 3 consecutive penalties. This really proved that Chelsea are not good when it comes to penalty shootout. Everybody still remembers their defeat from Liverpool in the last UEFA Champions League semi final.
But I'm really happy to see Florent Malouda. He showed a perfect physical condition last night at New Wembley. He's fast, didn't lose the ball easily and scored a goal beautifully. I guess he can fit well in the English style of football.

The Citizen Are Ready?

Manchester City manager, Sven Goran Eriksson, apparently can't forget the Serie A completely. After signing Rolando Bianchi from Reggina, Eriksson is reported by Sky Sports trying to land Fiorentina's Valery Bojinov. Last seaon, Bojinov was loaned out to Juventus and spent the whole season in the Serie B. Eriksson is also trying to land another Italian, Giorgio Chiellini, from Juventus. The left full back is allowed to find another club by Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri.
Well, I believe Manchester City is one of the most impressive teams in English football when it comes to transfer. So far, they already bought Gelson Fernandes, Geovanni, and Martin Petrov. These new signings, combined with players like Sylvain Distin, Ousmane Dabo, Giorgos Samaras, and Bernardo Corradi can produce such a strong team to compete this season. If Eriksson can blend them all together there's no doubt that The Citizen can end the season on top table. I think they will give teams like Hotspur and Bolton a hard time to be on 5th-6th spot on the table.

Nesta Quits International Football

Alessandro Nesta, one of Italy finest defenders and Milan center back, has announced his decision to retire from international football. Just like Francesco Totti, Nesta revealed his physical condition as the reason behind his decision. Obviously, this decision is another shock for Roberto Donadoni after 2 weeks ago Totti also announced his retirement from Gli Azzuri. Nesta also said that he never had any rift with Donadoni and that his physical condition is the only reason behind his retirement.
I'm sure every Italy fan will regret this since Nesta has always been the first choice in the Italy national team back four. He had played in 78 games for Italy and always involved in the last 3 World Cups. Unfortunately, he missed the 2006 World Cup final due to injury. the game that Italy won and made them the world champion.
Nesta is only 31 years old and, to be honest, this fact makes me wonder why he decided to retire from international football. 31 is not too old for a footballer to play both for the club and national team. I know that he got injured in the last world cup but I'm sure he can get well soon. Remember, Milan have a facility called Milan Lab which is the best facility to heal and "maintain" a footballer career. With Milan Lab, I'm sure Nesta will be okay the whole season and more than capable to play well in the club and national team. So, I think Donadoni should talk to him and try hard to get him back to international football. Afterall, Italy have no solid defenders since Paolo Maldini's retirement. Without Nesta, now Donadoni only has Matterazzi and Cannavaro as the first choice. These 2 are also great but Donadoni has no backup for them now.

Hyypia Extended His Contract

Liverpool has extended the contract of Finnish center back Sami Hyppia until 2008. Hyppia arrived at Anfield at 1999 from Dutch side Willem II. After extending the contract, Hyppia stated his desire to win the Premiership title, a title he never won since he arrived at Liverpool.
There's no doubt that Hyppia is a key element for Liverpool. He has proved himself as solid defender in his Liverpool career. He also has won every medal in Europe and England but ironically, he never won the most prestigious title in England, the Premiership. Although he has been a key factor for The Reds, Hyppia can't deny that he's getting older (he's 34) and slower now. Last season proved that he is no longer the first choice at the center back when Daniel Agger, who is a lot younger, showed great consistency alongside Jamie Carragher.
Hyppia's contract extension showed us that Liverpool is a club that doesn't throw away their star although he's getting older and slower. With a lot of transfer budget provided by their American owners, it is easy for The Reds to buy another young striker as a backup for Carragher and Agger. But they don't do that. They decided to honor a player like Hyppia by giving him another chance to win the league title.
