Valencia is one of the high profile teams in the La Liga. So far, they have been a favourite early in the season. I still remember how they won the Spanish league and UEFA Cup three years ago when nobody thought they could do that. As one of the favourites, Valencia has always filled with talented players. Every season they present a real threat to other favorites.
This season, we see different story from the Mestalla boys. As I write this post, Valencia sits on the 7th place of the table and has been knocked out of the European Champions League. The strings of bad result is a surprising one to me. Looking at their roster, I think Valencia could do much better in all competition. 4th place on the table and playing at the 1st stage of Champions League knockout round is where they supposed to be. The fact is, they are struggling just to get into the top 4 of the La Liga.
And then came Ronald Koeman to save the day. The Dutchman replace previous manager Queque Flores who has been sacked for obvious reason, of course. So far, Koeman didn't do anything magical for Valencia. They are still struggling with unease. The latest news is Koeman dropped senior players like Santiago Canizares, David Albelda, and Miguel Angel Angulo. They have been an integral part of the team for so many years but yet, Koeman dropped them since he feels those three can't give their best to the team.
Controversy is an instant impact of this decision. Some say that Koeman is to harsh to his players while others feel that Koeman is just being overreactive. I don't want to say much about this but I believe that manager has absolute power when it comes to determining his starting eleven. Controversy is something usual in football nowadays and Koeman knows that. I think he should be given full authority regarding his team. Any decision he makes is his responsibility and time will tell about the effectiveness of it.
Valencia contributes 6 players to the national team so far. They are three players I have mentioned above plus David Villa, David Silva, and Fernando Morientes. They are good players, actually, and I always enjoy their performance in the Spanish soccer. They also would be key players for Luis Aragones. However, Aragones can be worry now. Valencia's poor performance this season could damage their players morale and if this happens, Aragones will have problems. I don't think he can afford to have six of his key players spend the rest of this season with low morale. It could affect their performance in Spain national team and, eventually, could also harm Spain's chance in the Euro 2008.
So, Koeman has a tough job now. The fate of Spain national could rest on his arm.
Valencia Crisis Could Harm Spain?
Warning to Rijkaard
It was clear that Barcelona missed the magical touch of Lionel Messi. Ronaldinho and Deco, expected to be key players, pointed out that they are now only fringe players for the Catalan side. On the other side, Madrid only lost Guti due to injury but still capable to play well.
Frank Rijkaard must realize that his team is no longer a dominant side in the La Liga. He must have a deeper look at his teams. Players like Ronaldinho and Deco are no longer at their best form and seem to have lost their motivation. Rijkaard should consider to give youngsters like dos Santos and Bojan more minutes on the pitch. These two have great talents with high motivation to stand out and prove what they are made of. Bojan was introduced very late at El Clasico and he made an instant impact. I wonder why Rijkaard didn't pick Bojan in his starting line up. If things don't change until January, then we may see leaving Barcelona.
Will Tradition Survive?
First, the EPL leader Arsenal will play AC Milan at home before travel to San Siro. Arsenal, no doubt,is really on fire right now. They only lost once in the EPL and recently won 1-0 from another favourite Chelsea which is a boost to their European football level campaign while continues their pathetic performance in the Italian football. Oddly, both team do have different history in the Champions League. Arsenal never won the Champions League while Milan is one of the European rulers with their 7 titles. So far, Arsenal's best achievement is reaching the finals in 2006 where they lost to Barcelona. Can Milan continue their tradition or maybe it's time for Arsenal to break through?
Let's not forget Liverpool. I'm sure Rafael Benitez curses the drawing that put them together with Serie A leader, Inter. Both team are doing well in their domestic league, especially for Inter, but their tradition in the European level makes the difference between both sides. It's gonna be proven European mentality of Liverpool against a very prolific side Inter.
Another real final fixture is between AS Roma and Real Madrid. Like previous matches i said earlier, this is also another example of a match between two strong sides with difference in the term of European tradition.
So, what is it gonna be? Will traditional Champions League teams survive?
Will Milan Slump Continue?
This weekend, Milan will face fierce rival Inter in the derby game. Following a 4-1 win against Reggina, I'm pretty sure Inter will face this derby more comfortably. Looking at the current form, Inter has a better chance than Milan.
But is there no chance at all for Milan? I know that Inter is on a good form now. However, we have to remember that Inter midfield could be in trouble now. Patrick Viera and Olivier Dacourt, two key players in the midfield, will absence due to injury. On the other hand, Milan midfield is pretty solid. Key players like Massimo Ambrossini, Andrea Pirlo, and Gennaro Gattuso are in perfect condition. If they can win the battle in the midfield, maybe Milan can win. Kaka will play an important role as usual. His amazing skill and magical pass will be a decisive factor.
The only problem Milan has is Inter strikers. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is so deadly as usual and his job can be a lot easier considering Milan's old defenders. Ibrahimovic's pace can do a lot damage for Milan's back four. If Ibrahomic has a bad day, then Suazo or Julio Cruz can provide the same danger.
I guess both team have good confidence. The World Cup winner title will boost Milan's players to prove that their fixtures in Japan were something precious and not just 'friendlies' like Roberto Mancini claimed. Their ambition to end this season in the top four will also add gasoline to Milan's engine since losing could put an end to their ambition.
On the other hand, Inter will make use of this game to prove that they are better even than the world champion. A win just before new year will also boost their motivation to win the scudetto again.
Is It Over for The Reds?
This season, the same story could happen. After a terrific transfer in the summer windows by landing Fernando Torres, Ryan Babel, and Yossi Benayoun, Liverpool once again considered as a strong contender for the title. The so called Rafalution since 3 years ago was believed to bring good result to The Reds. Now, for the first time in 3 years, we can a very good depth at Liverpool squad where there are at least 2 players fighting for one position.
But, is everything okay for Liverpool now? Can they wrap the title this season? To be honest, Liverpool's chance is getting harder every week. After a shocking defeat at Reading last week, they lost against Manchester United at home. I know that 2 losts doesn't erase their chance to win the league. But let's take a look at how Liverpool is doing against their fellow Big Four. They have played Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United at home and they only gained 2 points from those crucial games. They lost against Manchester United and drawn against Arsenal and Chelsea. This means that after the new year they will play those 3 teams on away games. How can they win against them if they can't do it at home soil? These 3 games will be very difficult to handle.
One more thing to think of is Liverpool's consistency. So far they have 6 draws which is a disadvantage to then. I personally think that these draws is a result of their inconsistency. Benitez' rotation policy has a great deal with this matter. On the other hand, other Big Four members has showed great consistency. Arsenal keep on firing with their youngsters, Manchester United look vveru solid after a slow start, and Chelsea show that they still can do a lot without their Special One. These 3 teams are better in the term of consistency.
But hey, anything can happen in football. With a hectic schedule, injuries can be a very important factor. This is something we can't predict. I just hope the EPL title race will be hot until the very last week.
Eto'o or Messi?
On the other hand, striker Samuel Eto'o has recovered from his long injury. Last week, he played in the Valencia game and scored a wonderful goal. Eto'o's return is a good news for Frank Rijkaard since he has lost Thierry Henry. There's no doubt that Eto'o will provide the same sharpness as Henry does.
But, can Eto't replace Messi? This is a question I found on reuters blog. I know that Eto'o is a lethal striker in front of goal. He can make the most of almost every opportunity, even if it's only a small one. He also has the pace that makes him a perfect target man so it's easier for Barcelona's midfielder to create an attack in various ways. I agree if people say that Eto'o is a top class striker right now. I personally think that Eto'o is a better than Henry when it comes to the style of play. Eto'o is more powerful than Henry and I always like that kind of striker.
Messi? Everybody knows what he's capable of. Like any other strikers, this kid knows how to score. I know he's not as powerful as Eto'o but Messi is truly a football artist. Beside Kaka and Christiano Ronaldo, Messi is one footballer with an amazing dribbling skill. He can go pass his marker with his magical move and then slice inside the penalty box to score or provide a golden opportunity for his teammates. This is something Eto'o can't do.
If I were Frank Rijkaard, I'd rather to lose Eto'o than Messi. The element of surprise that Messi could provide is something priceless and I don't think no other Barcelona's player can do that. If I lose Eto'o or Henry I could pick one of two most talented kids, Bojan or Dos Santos. I know these two are young and still lack of experience, but so far they never disappointed me when Rijkaard pick them to play. Once again, the element of surprise Messi has is something irreplaceable.
The Gunners Keep on Firing
This result showed how good Arsenal are right now. I know a win from Chelsea is not something shocking but this win can be crucial this season. With Manchester United's consistency, Arsenal can't afford to lose one single game.
In my previous post, I said that Arsenal will face a striking problem after Thierry Henry left to try his luck at La Liga with Barcelona. I have to admit that I was wrong. I can't see any striking problem for Arsenal now. Fabregas, Hleb, and Adebayor are, indeed, capable to win every game. Now, I have to say that Arsenal have what it takes to win the EPL.
Chelsea? Well, I think they are still in transition after Jose Mourinho's departure. This season is not the one they will win easily like they used to do.
Reds Lost Again!
This result also means that Liverpool are now 9 points behind Manchester United who sits at 2nd on the table. From now on, it will be more difficult for Benitez Boys to win the EPL. Manchester United has showed great consistency so far. They always play well every week with great enthusiasm to win while Liverpool performance is somewhat a roller coaster ride. This consistency issue is very crucial because the schedule is very hectic with The Champions League coming on February.
I don't know what happens inside Liverpool dressing room. They have quality players and more depth this season. Now, we can see 2 players fighting for the same position which is good for the manager to select his starting eleven. Rafael Benitez is also a reputable manager in Europe with good tactical skill. But still, Liverpool can't win against teams that belong to the EPL Big Four.If Liverpool continues this trend against Big Four, then they can forget the EPL title this season.
On the other hand, this lost could be "good" for Benitez. As we all know, Benitez' request for more funds to buy players has been denied by the American owners. Benitez can use this lost to convince his boss about buying more players in January. I myself think that buying players is not a solution. Like I said earlier, Liverpool have enough depth this season. All Benitez has to think about is how to bring consistency every week. He needs to figure out his starting eleven instead of experimenting and rotating a lot. There's no point of buying players if Benitez is still confused about his starting eleven.
EPL Super Big Matches!
Arsenal vs Chelsea
Big game in Emirates. Arsenal will be up for this game but so will Chelsea. We all know how dangerous Arsenal youngsters so far. The key factor to Arsenal will be Cesc Fabregas and Aleksander Hleb. These two players are the backbone of Arsenal's short passing game. The flow of the ball is also rellied on these two players. The spirit, determination, and pace of the Young Gunners have the potential to bring nightmare to the Chelsea defence. However, consistency is becoming an issue for Wenger's side. Last week, they lost to relegation battler Middlesbrough in a game where everybody thought Arsenal couldn't lose.
Chelsea are looking better and better after the departure of Jose Mourinho. Avram Grant doesn't change the formation much and continued the work of Mourinho. Their 4-3-3 formation still looks sharp. Chelsea fans should be thankful because Peter Cech will be back again following his recovery. We all know that Cech is consistent goalkeeper and his presence brings more confident to his back four. The bad news is Didier Drogba is still injured. The deadly striker will be absence untill, at least, January 2008.
Liverpool vs Manchester United
Another super big match is Liverpool against Manchester United at Anfield. Liverpool are in a good morale condition after the winning a crucial Champions League game against Marseille last mid week. Their two key players, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, are in a good form now. They have been the most crucial players in the past few weeks. One thing The Reds should consider is consistency. They may look dangerous in one game but then playing like amateurs in another game (the Reading game is a perfect example).
Manchester United succeed to improve their game after the bad start they had. Anfield is a rather friendly place for them. Last week, they won 1-0 here. The record in the past 5 years also on their side. Ronaldo will be the key player. This could be good if he's on the top form. On the other hand, if Liverpool back four can do the marking job well then Manchester United will be in trouble.
Chelsea Extended Grant's Contract
Is Grant a good manager? Well, it's kind a hard to find his track record as a football manager. He only had experience in the Israeli football league and failed to bring his country to play in the last World Cup. Beside that, there's nothing much to say about his reputation.
People think that he's done a great job at Chelsea. Well, I don't think I fully agree with that opinion. I know that Chelsea are still on the right track (as I said earlier) but people have to remember that Avram Grant is not the one who built Chelsea the way they are now. It was Mourinho who did all the team building since the first day he arrived. Grant just simply follows Mourinho's path. He uses the same 4-3-3 pattern that Mourinho had developed, the same players formation, and even the similar substitution pattern in the middle of a game. Grant is now also backed up by a brilliant assistant, Henk ten Cate, who was the right hand of Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona. Cate was Rijkaard's key factor behind Barcelona's success. After Cate left, Barcelona couldn't win anything.
I don't know why Chelsea bothered to extend Grant's contract instead of looking for other possibilites.
Do or Die, Reds!
Just before the Marseille game, Liverpool lost 3-1 to Reading at the Madejski Stadium. In this game, Benitez made an usual decision when he substituted Steven Gerrard while trailing 3-1. This decision was said to be confusing regarding Benitez' priority. If he foucesed more on EPL, why the hell did he substituted Gerrard? Didn't he want to win?
To be honest, I can understand Benitez' decision. Being trailed 3-1 at away game against a hardworking side like Reading and still have to think about the most crucial game this season against Marseille, of course Benitez wouldn't want to see his skipper got injured or exhausted. Like I said, the Marseille game will be a do or die game where there's no room for any mistake and all players have to be in their best shape.
Priority? I'm sure Benitez still considers the EPL title as the most important thing to win. But you have to remember that European football glory is very tempting for every football manager in Europe. Not to mention the money offered in every game. Benitez knows that he has a very good side to focus on EPL and the Champions League. If he can keep his players fresh and determine every game's priority, there's a good chance he can do the double at the end of the season.
I know that every Liverpool die hard fan can't believe that they lost to Reading. But they have to also remember that 1 game doesn't make the whole season. Losing to Reading didn't hurt their EPL campaign that much while losing at Marseille will be a shame.
Capello Or Mourinho?
Both Capello and Mourinho are tremendous managers. They have proven their reputations in European football. Capello was the man behind Milan success (also known as The Dream Team) back in the 90's. His 2 terms in Real Madrid ended with throphies for Los Merengues. Early in the 2000's, Capello brought Roma to the scudetto, something The Giallorossi couldn't achieve after Capello's departure to Juventus. In other word, anything Capello touched turned into gold.
Mourinho is considered one of the best young managers in the world. At the age of 40's, he proved himself when he brought Porto as the Champions League winner back in 2004. We know that Porto wasn't considered as a strong candidate at that time. Mourinho's achievement with Porto trully raised some eye brows and suddenly his name was in the lip of every football fan. When he moved to Chelsea, the same success followed him. 2 back to back title leagues only proves his capability as a football manager. Eventhough he failed to win in Europe with Chelsea, Mourinho is still the best manager The Blues ever had.
Capello or Mourinho? it's pretty hard to choose since they both are successful and genious. But if it was for me to choose, I would say that Capello is more suitable for the job. Why? Because he has more experience than Mourinho. Capello had been successful with big clubs which means he can handle any pressure. So far, Chelsea is the only big football clubs for Mourinho. I doubt that he can handle the pressure being England manager. When it comes to tactical knowledge, I think those 2 managers are in the same level.
Euro 2008 Without England
As the world champion, Italy will give us a very entertaining football games to watch. They have calibre players to do so. I know Italy has always been known as a defensive team and that's not something so entertaining to watch. It's not entirely wrong but, to be honest, Italy always a joy to watch. I think they now know how to play an attacking football. With great talents on the offensive side like Del Piero, Toni, Iaquinta, and Inzaghi, we can expect a great attacking style of football from the Italian.
Let's not forget Portugal. It's interesting to see how Ronaldo dancing and dribbling from the flank. I still remember how he cried 4 years ago after losing the final game from Greece. I bet next year Ronaldo will play with more enthusiasm to redeem his failure 4 years. By the way, Portugal also have Nani who I think is one the best young talents in European football right now. Everybody will be excited to see what he can do next year.
Speaking of youngsters, let's not forget that France have Karim Benzema and Samir Nasri. These 2 youngsters have gained a lot of attention from international football fans because of their performance this season. France will also include Franck Ribery who played very well last year in the World Cup. Now, he's getting more mature and has become a key player for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
Germany are also interesting to watch. Last year, I think they proved themselves as the most entertaining team in the World Cup. If they can play the same way they did last year, there's a good chance for team in Euro 2008.
No England in Euro 2008? No problem!!
Roma, Looking Good in Italian Football Without Totti
That fact is something interesting. We all know that Totti is the brain of Roma attacking scheme. Their midfielders always tried to find Totti when they have the chance to launch attack. With his great vision, Totti can setup a goal or even scores himself. The degree of Roma's dependence to Totti had always been high so that everybody thinks that Roma can't win a single game without Totti. This happened last season when Totti got injured until the end of season and costed Roma the scudetto.
I don't think that's going to happen this season. Roma can prove that they can perform very well without their captain around. Mirko Vucinic can prove that he can step in and provide depth for his team. I believe Vucinic is better than Totti as a pure striker. Totti is an attacking midfielder instead of a striker. I know last season he was the top goal scorer in Europe but, to be honest, he is a much better player as an attacking midfielder behind the striker. It's interesting to see Totti, when he recovers, to play just behind Vucinic.
Come On, Rijkaard!
I think Frank Rijkaard, the Barcelona manager, should give a lot of thought about his boys' away performance. I believe Rijkaard should emphasize more on his team's mentality when it comes to away games. The 4-3-3 pattern is not the problem because they always play well with this pattern at home but perform like a relegation battling team away from home with the same pattern. I don't know exactly about Spanish football atmosphere. All I know is it's always full house there. The crowd really make themselves heard throughout the game and put pressure on the visitor. Maybe this kind of pressure is something Barcelona players can't deal with.
I'd like to point out star footballers that Barcelona have now. Ronaldinho, Messi, Henry, Puyol, etc are star players who already gained major throphies troughout their professional footballing career. With big salaries every week, there's nothing else they pursue now. In other word, lack of motivation could be a major issue for Rijkaard to handle now. He must be able to spread the passion among his players. He must remind his players that the fans would love to see them win anywhere they play football. He also should consider to give youngsters like Bojan and dos Santos more minutes on the pitch because young footballers are still hungry for the title. They will play with their heart on the pitch.
Why, Rafa?

Last week, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was reported to have a conflict with the club owners. Benitez insisted to be given more money to buy more players in the winter tranfer window. His request denied by American owners who thought that Benitez has a good squad already and should focus on his current players. Benitez didn't share the same idea and felt that he should be given more money. From this point, the conflict between them were something obvius and Benitez' commitment for Liverpool was questioned. There was a rumor that the Spaniard gaffer considered the England job.
To be honest, I can't understand why Benitez got so upset about this. Last summer, he'd been given cash to bring quality players such as Benayoun, Torres, and Babel. So far, they are proven to be good signings. If we look at the table now, we can see that Liverpool sits on 3rd with 1 game in hand and they are definetly still on the right track. In the Champions League, they are also still alive with good chance to progress considering their current form.
Good signings, still on the title race, and looking threatening, I can't understand what makes Benitez so upset. He got what he wants and so far did a great job. The players and fans also respect him. So, don't be upset, Rafa..
